It’s luxury many people hope for, but few can afford: to experience life in a mid-century masterpiece. A recent NYT photo essay documenting the tenants of Lafayette Park, a van der Rohe complex in Detroit, showed us what life is like for the lucky few who live in the complex. We love the idea that the housing bust and the lack of developer interest in these landmarks means that normal people — students, professors, artists, and so on — can afford to experience life the way Mies presumably intended.
